Chopping carrots was easy. It was the onion that always needed guidance.
Rolo, remind me the onion technique?
My new limited-edition pastel pink RoloBot purred with pleasure, calculated the perfect onion cutting procedure, then offered to cut the vegetable for me. But I waved her off and continued chopping.
In the silence, a thought occurred to me: Rolo, what’s your favorite thing about me?
She paused, her meter shifting. I thought maybe she would not answer. Finally she said, That you need me.
I began crying. And not because I needed her, mind you.
But because of the onion.
